The Tata LPTA 3138 truck was developed as a private venture to meet a possible Indian Army requirement. It is also referred as a Tata High Mobility Vehicle or HMV. For a long time Indian Army was obtaining Czech-designed Tatra trucks. However procurement of Tatras has been put on hold due to a bribery case. Tata Motors developed not only 8x8 version, but the whole family of military trucks. Also there are 4x4, 6x6 and even 12x12 versions.
Indian Army already operates a significant number of various trucks, produced by Tata Motors. However these are light and medium vehicles.
Ashok Leyland, another Indian truck manufacturer, proposes a Super Stallion military truck, as a replacement for the Tatras. It also has 8x8 configuration and similar specifications.
